Matching your fingernail polish to your toenail polish. I for one am happy the un-matchy look is in. I can NEVER narrow down my color choices. In fact, I can be quoted saying, “picking a nail color is harder than naming your firstborn.” I have went into the nail salon with an exact color chosen, mind made up, only to stand in front of the dreaded wall-of-colors and waiver until I have wasted a good 10 minutes and an iced coffee. I’m sure I am not the only one who suffers nail color anxiety. I can’t be! I find choosing two colors much easier (I have gained some valuable insight on how the Bachelorette must feel). Here are a few of my favorite color combos!
|1| Essie “Butler Please” / Essie “Blanc” |2| Essie “Perennial Chic” / Essie “Blanc”
|3| Essie “Peachside Babe” / Julep “Briana” |4| Deborah Lipman “Supermodel” / Essie “Resort Fling”
|5| Essie “Braziliant” / Essie “Knockout Pout” |6| Essie “Knockout Pout” / Essie “Blanc
Unfinished hems. I’m sure if you spend any time on Instagram or Pinterest, you will have noticed a lot of stylish ladies rocking the denim with the hem that looks like they cropped their skinnies themselves. This is what is now being referred to as “the raw hem”.
I for one have been obsessed with this look for a while but could never find a pair that hit my ankles in the right spot (the long-legged curse). So I decided to take matters into my own hands and take my favorite pair of skinnies to the tailor. A bit of a confusing discussion (on their part) and plenty of picture examples on my end and we were in business. This also worked into my capsule wardrobe/closet purging quite well and I am happy to report, $15 and two days later, I have repurposed an old pair of jeans into a pair I am obsessing over. The best part, they will look more authentic with every wash. Now I just have to wait until fall to rock them (crazy Houston heat)!

Hot house. That seems to be my biggest challenge this summer with the hot dry Alberta weather this year. And for most of us Northerners, we don’t have A/C considering we would only need it for 3 months of the year. So we depend on the trusty and often hideous fans. So what can we do to supplement the ugliness of fans and still stay cool in the summer? Check out these very IN fan options…

Decorating with books; the classic coffee table books, or loading your shelves with books that reflect your interest are a great way to add color and conversation to your room.
I for one, LOVE my books and refuse to part with them; however, I will admit, some of my books are more for looks…
Obviously, I flock to the design books, but there are so many alternatives; and to be honest majority of the “coffee table books” I have are either gifts, or from the clearance section at Chapters-Indigo, or from a used book store.
This is also another great option for house warming gifts! For the guys, look for a book on vintage car collections or sports book. Also consider topics such as:
- Heritage or traditional reflection of the household
- “This day in…” history book covering a topic with timelines
- Fashion is always an easy go-to for any girl
- Gray’s Anatomy (no, not the TV show), a textbook on humans is always cool
- Historical events, literature, or biographies
- Art or architecture books are a beautiful option as well
