Looking for something to do this weekend (other than celebrate our Dad’s on Sunday for Father’s Day) maybe a date night, or a girls night. The Edmonton International Jazz Festival is gracing our city, starting this weekend June 19 to June 28!
I will admit, I am kind of a closet lover of Jazz music. I used to croon my way through evenings in my single days with a glass of wine and some soothing Jazz tunes, now I do it in the privacy of my vehicle where my husband cant judge me for thinking I’m a classy. The only other closet Jazz lover that can relate to me is my blogging-other-half, Amber. We had many evenings listening to Mr. Buble and Jazzy Christmas tunes when we lived together.
Anyway, my Jazz fascination is thanks to my mother. She made my brother and I listen to endless hours of every genre of music; although, it may have annoyed me then when I would have rather listen to Backstreet Boys, I am thankful for it now. So obviously my date this weekend will be my mama!
We are hitting the town Friday night starting with a reservation at ever-so-cool Ambersand27 on Whyte Ave., where we will gorge ourselves on charcuterie goodies and too much wine. This will be followed by an evening at the Yardbird Suite, starting with an 8pm show by Robi Botos Quartet featuring Seamus Blake, then a 9:30pm show by Halifax-based group Gypsophilia.
Tickets for both of these shows on Friday, June 19 are $32.00 and can be purchased through Tix on the Square. Other festival shows can similarly be purchased online; additionally there are a bunch of free shows throughout the city and a couple headliners taking place at the Winspear.
